CLOSING REMARKS: WHAT MAKES A CITY?
Council Chambers: 4:45—6pm

Simon Critchley, Leo Hollis, Khafre James,
Reverend Dr. Harold R. Mayberry, Dashka Slater, Atra Taylor

Responses will take the form of anecdotes, aphorisms, allegories, elegies, satires, eulogies, epiphanies, micro-lectures, odes, appeals, interventions, prose poems, jeremiads, and invectives. Respondents are invited to take as much liberty with the question—and its attendant concerns—as they wish. “What makes a city?”  is only a starting point: an invitation to speak freely and speculatively on cities in general, on Oakland in particular, and on anything in between. Responses will be wide-reaching, far-flung, and dissimilar; to that end we have asked a philosopher, a poet, an artist, an historian, a minister, and a dreamer to respond.
